Two sluice gates remain open at Vaal, Bloemhof outflows decreased
Two sluice gates at the Vaal dam remain open, while the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has reduced the outflow at Bloemhof dam.
The current water outflow of 292.86 cubic metres per second (m3/s), through the two open sluice gates, is being maintained, as the water inflow at the Vaal dam, which currently has a water storage level of 107.69%, declines from 277.63 m3/s to 229.71 m3/s.
On March 6, the DWS opened the first valves at the Vaal dam to release water to prevent overflowing. By April 6, five sluice gates had been opened amid ongoing rainfall. Water releases at Bloemhof dam had been increased simultaneously.
On April 15, two sluice gates at the Vaal dam were closed and a third was closed on April 16.
However, the DWS is continuing to monitor inflow water levels in the Integrated Vaal River System as more rainfall is predicted in the upper Vaal catchment.
The department aims to ensure that necessary precautions are in place in line with dam safety standards and hydrological monitoring systems to safeguard infrastructure and attenuate any flood conditions.
Meanwhile, the water releases at the Bloemhof dam, which recorded water levels of 106.91% on Tuesday, were gradually reduced to 700 m3/s on April 15 and again to 500 m3/s on April 18.
The water outflow at the Bloemhof dam had been increased incrementally, reaching outflows of 3 000 m3/s by April 8, to manage water levels, before being decreased in stages to 1 100 m3/s by April 14.
At Grootdraai dam, all sluice gates have now been closed and the storage capacity is at 104.9% with inflows of 41.43 m3/s.
